The death toll from the floods in Assam, India, has risen to 100
The death toll from massive flooding in the state of Assam in northeastern India has reached 100 after two more people died overnight, officials said. Several rivers in the region, including the Brahmaputra, remain above dangerous levels, posing a risk of further flooding in vulnerable areas.
Prolonged monsoon rains have caused rivers to overflow their banks. The water has flooded settlements, damaged roads and other local infrastructure, and disrupted residents’ daily lives. The Brahmaputra has flooded villages, swept away homes, and forced nearly 300,000 people to relocate to government-run temporary shelters.
The floods, which began last month, forced more than 700,000 people to leave their homes. According to officials, at least 49,000 affected people are still in 125 camps and relief distribution centers, although some residents are already returning home as the water recedes.

The disaster also caused significant losses to the livestock sector: a large number of animals perished, which particularly affected rural communities and raised concerns about possible disease outbreaks. Farukuddin Ahmed, a merchant from the town of Nazira in Sivasagar District—which suffered the most damage—said that many families are returning to homes covered in a layer of silt up to a meter thick. According to him, in the village of Nepali-Khuti, which had about 100 households before the flood, only a few houses remain, while the rest were swept away by the floodwaters.
Assam’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Piyush Hazrika, stated that officials have been instructed to complete the damage assessment as quickly as possible so that the government can provide financial assistance for reconstruction. He noted that approximately 50,000 affected people have already received interim cash payments.
