Cyprus received nearly €120 million from the EU after implementing reforms — Cyprus Mail

The European Commission transferred nearly €120 million to Cyprus under the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility after the country met agreed reform and investment targets. The payment was part of more than €9.8 billion in funding also received by Poland, Sweden, Belgium and Estonia, Cyprus Mail reports.

Sixth funding request

Cyprus submitted its sixth funding request on December 17, 2025. The European Commission approved it on July 13, 2026, and, after the EU Council approved the disbursements, adopted the relevant payment decisions and transferred the funds.

Following this tranche, Cyprus has received 67% of the funds allocated under its national recovery and resilience plan. The total volume of grant funding for the country amounts to €1.02 billion. The remaining 33% may be paid provided that other agreed milestones and targets are properly implemented.

Measures funded

The measures linked to the latest payment include the introduction of a new school evaluation system, the creation of a system for cross-border exchange of patients’ health data, and flexible working arrangements in the public sector.

They also include the expansion of electronic services in the building permit issuance system. Separately, the funding covers the development at the University of Cyprus of testing infrastructure for renewable energy sources and smart electricity grids, as well as its connection to the power grid.

The European Commission stressed that the Recovery and Resilience Facility operates on a performance-based principle: funds are allocated only after agreed reform and investment commitments have been satisfactorily fulfilled. This mechanism is a key part of the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme.
