Cypriot Liverpool fan calls for partnership with Turkish Airlines to be suspended
In Cyprus, Liverpool fan Andreas Charalambous called on the football club to suspend the implementation of its partnership with Turkish Airlines and consult the Cypriot community of the team’s supporters. In his view, the decision is insensitive to the situation on the island, which, as he noted, remains divided and has Turkish forces present in its north.
Five-year deal
As Cyprus Mail reports, Liverpool agreed to a five-year deal with Turkish Airlines on Tuesday. From June 1, 2027, the airline will become the club’s principal partner. This will be the first change of the team’s leading shirt sponsor since 2010 and will end a 17-year partnership with Standard Chartered.
According to the media outlet, the contract will be worth more than £300 million. This could make the deal one of the most lucrative in the Premier League.

Questions for the club
Charalambous stressed that his position is not directed against Turkish people, fans, or Turkish Liverpool supporters. He asked the club to explain whether it consulted Liverpool’s official supporters’ club in Cyprus before concluding the deal, whether it took Cyprus’s division into account during its ethical and reputational review, and how it assessed the impact of the new sponsor on Greek and Greek Cypriot fans.
The fan said he would not buy or wear a Liverpool shirt featuring Turkish Airlines as sponsor. He called on the club to listen to Cypriot supporters of the team and answer the questions raised before further implementing the partnership.
