China reports archaeological discoveries in Egypt, Tunisia and Kyrgyzstan — ECNS

China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration on September 24 released the results of three joint archaeological projects in Egypt, Tunisia and Kyrgyzstan. Researchers reported the discovery of a previously unknown sacred lake at an Egyptian temple, archaeological remains in Tunisia, and 24 ancient city sites in the Chu River basin in Kyrgyzstan, ECNS reports.

Sacred lake in Luxor

A Chinese-Egyptian archaeological team discovered a sacred lake covering more than 50 square meters on the grounds of the Montusite Temple in Luxor. Another sacred lake had previously been identified in the northern part of the temple complex.

According to China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration, the two lakes form a layout with two sacred bodies of water within a single temple complex. This discovery provides new information for studying the functions of the ancient temple.

Findings in Tunisia and Kyrgyzstan

At the Ben Arous Forest site in Tunisia, a joint Chinese-Tunisian team found structural remains, reservoirs, ash pits and kilns dating from the Punic to the Roman period.

The site covers about 20,000 square meters. It includes areas of temples, residential buildings, baths and workshops. The team also established an archaeological park at the site through landscaping work and on-site displays.

At the Krasnaya Rechka archaeological site in Kyrgyzstan, a Chinese-Kyrgyz expedition has been conducting research and excavations since 2018. In the Chu River basin, specialists identified 24 ancient city sites, helping to study the development of urban systems and cultural exchanges along the Silk Road.
