China rejects US sanctions against Iranian airlines — Premium Times Nigeria

China said it will not comply with new US sanctions against Iranian airlines and will continue allowing them to fly to the country. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stressed that Beijing opposes unilateral sanctions which, in its view, have no basis in international law and have not been approved by the UN Security Council.

As Premium Times Nigeria reports, a Mahan Air plane from Tehran landed in Guangzhou on Wednesday after the US restrictions took effect. The outlet cites FlightRadar24 data.

US restrictions

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously said that Washington would impose sanctions on international airports, ground handling companies and ticket sales agents if they continue servicing Iranian airlines. According to him, such entities could lose access to the dollar system.

According to the outlet, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Oman, Qatar and Turkey have already barred Iranian airlines from using their airports after the US sanctions took effect.

Tehran's statement

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei said that Iran would not stand aside if countries in the Persian Gulf region ban Iranian airline flights and cooperate with the United States. Reuters quoted him as saying that in this case, the airports of those countries would not be able to operate. Iran also said it would take necessary measures to protect its airlines.
