China has responded to the strike on the nuclear waste storage facility in Chernobyl
China commented on the shelling by Russian forces of a nuclear waste storage facility at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, stating the need to ensure nuclear safety in Ukraine. Beijing emphasized that a political settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is a prerequisite for stability and called on all parties to create conditions for the resumption of dialogue and negotiations.
“China pays close attention to the safety of nuclear facilities and nuclear infrastructure. A final political resolution of the ‘Ukrainian crisis’ (as the PRC officially refers to the Russian war against Ukraine—ed. ) in this context, is a prerequisite for ensuring nuclear safety in the region,” Lin said, commenting at the request of Ukrinform on reports of Russia’s June 7 strike on the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
The diplomat also noted that Beijing’s position on the conflict in Ukraine has been and remains consistent, namely that its resolution is possible only through dialogue and negotiations.
“China calls on all parties to work together to de-escalate the ‘crisis’ as soon as possible and create conditions for the resumption of negotiations,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, according to Ukrinform.
Earlier, Russian occupation forces launched a drone strike on the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) located in the Kyiv region.
