China says more than 50,000 young Americans joined exchange programs — ECNS
China said that as of May 2026, more than 50,000 young Americans had visited the country as part of exchange and study programs. ECNS reports that this achieved the goal announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in November 2023.
The 2023 initiative
In November 2023 in San Francisco, Xi Jinping said that China was ready to invite 50,000 young Americans to exchange and study programs over the next five years. According to the Chinese outlet, the target was reached about two and a half years ahead of schedule.
ECNS writes that Chinese and American young people participate in sporting events and cooperate in science and technology. The outlet links such contacts to deepening friendly ties between young people in the two countries.

Letters from exchange participants
On the eve of a state visit to the United States, Xi Jinping replied to letters from young Americans from ten universities who had come to China to take part in youth exchange events. According to ECNS, in his response he emphasized that young people in China and the United States live on the same planet and have a mission of their time.
The outlet also notes that Xi Jinping has supported the development of youth contacts between China and the United States in recent years.
