China announces major copper and gold deposit in Anhui province
China has announced a significant breakthrough in copper and gold exploration: the Chating porphyry copper-polymetallic deposit has been discovered in the city of Xuancheng in the eastern province of Anhui. It is the largest deposit of this type in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, ECNS reports.
Resource assessment
According to China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, the estimated copper resources at the deposit exceed the scale of several large mines with resources of 500,000 metric tons each. The gold potential, according to the ministry’s assessment, exceeds the volumes of ten large mines with resources of 20 metric tons each.
The ministry also stated that there are significant opportunities for further reserve increases. The deposit is located in the center of the Yangtze River Delta.

Significance for industry
Hu Xianqi, a representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources, noted that the rapid result of this key exploration project of 2026 demonstrates the considerable potential of domestic mineral exploration in China. At the same time, the country is significantly dependent on copper imports.
Copper is an important raw material for the photovoltaic industry, wind power, and electric vehicle production. The report states that the discovery is expected to supply local processing enterprises with raw materials, ease supply bottlenecks, and increase the region’s resource self-sufficiency.
