China says it will participate responsibly in UN secretary-general election — ECNS
China will participate responsibly in the process of electing the next UN secretary-general. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said this at a regular briefing, ECNS reports.
Criteria for the candidate
According to Guo Jiakun, the election of a new head of the United Nations concerns the reform and development of the UN, as well as the vital interests of all member states. China supports the election of a new secretary-general in accordance with the UN Charter.

Beijing believes that the candidate must abide by the UN Charter, demonstrate outstanding professional qualities, maintain impartiality and integrity, and conscientiously fulfill their duties.
Question about possible support
The spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry was asked whether China is considering supporting Rebeca Grynspan, secretary-general of the UN Conference on Trade and Development and former vice president of Costa Rica, or Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana’s permanent representative to the UN. Guo Jiakun replied that China would work with all relevant parties and participate responsibly in the election process.
