China’s “fat prisons”: inside military-style weight-loss camps
In China, a new wave of weight-loss centres, dubbed “fat prisons” on social media, is gaining traction. Adults with excess weight voluntarily join these camps for stays usually lasting 14 or 28 days, costing about $1,500. Early departure is nearly impossible, as these facilities are secured with 24/7 guards and strict supervision.

These camps operate on strict military principles: waking at 7:30 a.m., twice-daily weigh-ins, and four hours of daily training including cardio, strength workouts, HIIT, spinning and boxing. Meals are strictly portioned with simple Chinese dishes made with vegetables, rice, meat, and eggs; snacks are forbidden. Rooms are regularly inspected, and any contraband treats are confiscated.
China has faced a sharp rise in obesity in recent years, prompting the establishment of over a thousand such camps nationwide. The expansion of these facilities signals a stringent approach to combating the growing obesity epidemic in the country.
