Chinese scientists discover new migration route of ancient animals

Chinese paleontologists have uncovered remains of ancient dicynodont reptiles of the species Dinanomodon guoi, which lived over 250 million years ago. These fossils were found in both China and South Africa, marking the first time such large animals have been recorded at opposite ends of the ancient supercontinent Pangaea.

The discovery indicates the existence of an ecological corridor crossing the equatorial regions of Pangaea through which large four-legged animals could migrate. This challenges previous views on fauna distribution during the Late Permian period (299–252 million years ago), when it was thought large organisms rarely crossed the equator due to unfavorable environmental conditions.

This breakthrough could significantly reshape understanding of ecological and migratory dynamics of that era and open new avenues for research into the biodiversity of ancient continents.
