North Korea launched an unidentified object toward the sea
On Thursday, August 20, North Korea launched an unidentified object toward the waters off its east coast. This was reported by South Korean military officials, according to Deutsche Welle.
Japan stated that the object could have been a ballistic missile, and its Coast Guard reported that it had already fallen from the sky. South Korean military officials described the type of object launched as unidentified, so its possible ballistic nature had not been confirmed at the time of the report.

The launch took place a few hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year.
Prior to this, a reduction in joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises was also announced. According to DW, the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, which were underway at the time of the report, were to end earlier than planned after Trump ordered them to be scaled back.
