KNUST in Ghana says statute review is ongoing
The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana said that no final decision has yet been made on the appointment of Pro-Vice-Chancellors and deans. The university issued the clarification after the KNUST chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-KNUST) expressed concerns over the outcome of an Academic Board meeting.
Draft to be submitted to the University Council
As MyJoyOnline reports, on September 9 the Academic Board considered a draft report by the Statutes Committee and added its proposals to the document. The board's report, the draft statutes and the recommendations are to be submitted to the University Council, which will be able to consider, review and potentially approve them.
In a statement dated September 10, 2026, KNUST management stressed that the outcome of the Academic Board meeting should not be considered the university's final position. It noted that the review of the statutes is ongoing and that claims that a decision has already been made on the issues raised by UTAG are premature.

Teachers' association position
On the same day, UTAG-KNUST said it was disappointed with the outcome of the Academic Board meeting. The association expected the current procedure for appointing Pro-Vice-Chancellors and deans to remain in place until a mutually acceptable mechanism was agreed.
UTAG-KNUST asserts that its participation in decisions concerning the leadership of academic staff is based on Act 1157, provision 5(f). The association also said that the university's strategic plan cannot take precedence over its statutes and announced its intention to ask the University Council to review the matter.
KNUST management assured that the review of the statutes is being conducted with an emphasis on inclusiveness, consultation and transparency. It also said that the positions and justified concerns of stakeholders would continue to be considered through appropriate university governance mechanisms.
