Chaos at the Romanian border: Ukrainians spend the night near border crossings
There is a significant build-up of people and vehicles at the Ukrainian-Romanian border. According to eyewitnesses, passengers are forced to wait several hours to pass through border and customs control, and traffic through some checkpoints has practically come to a standstill.
Due to the long wait and intense heat, people—including many families with children—are seeking even a little shade. Some people are setting up temporary resting spots right next to the checkpoints, using sleeping pads, blankets, and even tents, while others are forced to stay there overnight.
As a reminder, Romania has temporarily restricted truck traffic at the border with Ukraine due to the heat.
In Paris, officials have blamed the U.S. in part for the record-breaking heatwave in Europe.
In Poland, the heatwave broke the temperature record set in 1921.
Forecasters have predicted when the heatwave in Ukraine will begin to subside.
