Ireland is wrapping up its review of aluminum feedstock exports to Russia

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin stated that the country’s authorities are wrapping up an investigation into the possible export of alumina to Russia.

This refers to a raw material used in aluminum production. According to the prime minister, the investigation is already in its final stages, after which appropriate decisions will be made based on its findings.

Reports that Irish alumina is entering supply chains linked to the Russian military-industrial complex have raised concerns in Ukraine. Aughinish Alumina, a plant in County Limerick, has found itself at the center of the scandal. Ireland has launched an investigation into the reports, which, according to Micheál Martin, is nearing completion.

“I explained to Volodymyr (Zelenskyy—Ed.) that we are wrapping up the investigation and have gathered all the facts regarding this issue. I think we will then bring this before the commission. We do not want to be in a situation where materials produced at a plant in Ireland are sent to Russia to support their war machine,” said the Irish prime minister.

For his part, Zelenskyy emphasized that every metric ton of raw materials that reaches Russia is used against Ukraine in the war.

“We are grateful to the government and Micheál’s team that Ireland is conducting this investigation. We very much hope for a positive outcome for us. And we very much hope that we won’t have to wait months for it,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

He made these remarks on Wednesday in Dublin at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Irelandhas assumed the presidency of the Council of the EU.

As a reminder, Ireland advocates for increasing sanctions pressure on Russia and supports steps aimed at achieving lasting peace in Ukraine.

The Irish government is developing a new strategy to support Ukrainian refugees, which fundamentally changes the mechanism for providing financial assistance.
