The team of Turkey's opposition leader has left the party meeting
The team of Özgür Özeli, the suspended leader of Turkey’s main opposition party, has resigned from the party assembly. This move could serve as grounds for convening an extraordinary congress of the political party, at which the election of a new leadership is planned.
This decision became known after Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the court-appointed leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), requested the expulsion of nine members of the party assembly loyal to Özgür.
On June 11, the office of the ousted leader announced that 28 members of the 57-member party assembly had resigned. Legally, this decision should trigger the dissolution of the party assembly. In addition, it obliges the party to convene a congress within 45 days, at which a new council will be elected.
This was reported on Thursday by Ozel’s office, according to CNN Turk.
