Commentator Jennings criticizes Senate candidate Paxton — The Hill

In the United States, conservative commentator Scott Jennings criticized Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton over remarks that the Republican convention in Dallas ahead of the midterm elections had negatively affected his polling. The Hill reports.

Criticism on CNN

On CNN NewsNight, Jennings said that Paxton has a good chance of winning, but to do so he needs Donald Trump’s support, votes from the president’s supporters, and Republican Party resources. He also said that Paxton is trailing his opponent, James Talarico, in fundraising.

Jennings expressed dissatisfaction with the Texas politician’s comment. In his view, even if Paxton believed his assessment was honest, he should not have voiced it publicly and should instead have thanked everyone for their support.

Paxton’s remarks and adviser’s reaction

Paxton, who is also Texas attorney general, said in an audio recording circulated by The New York Times that everyone’s numbers had declined after the convention was held. He called the current situation unfavorable. According to the publication, the remarks were made at a private fundraising event in Washington attended by conservative donors and lobbyists.

Paxton’s senior adviser Nick Maddux called The New York Times report manipulative nonsense created for a story that, he said, does not exist. Paxton is running in a competitive Senate race in Texas, a state that usually supports Republicans.
