A European Parliament committee has voted in favor of a trade agreement with the United States
The European Parliament's Committee on International Trade voted in favor of implementing a major trade agreement with the United States, which officially provides for the elimination of import duties on a specific range of goods.
Members of the European committee supported two key legislative initiatives aimed at significantly reducing the tariff burden in bilateral trade.
The approved decision is a logical step in ratifying the preliminary agreement reached on May 20 between the EU Council and the European Parliament regarding two documents within the “framework” trade agreement with the US that directly address tariff issues.
The new rules are designed to stimulate economic cooperation and stabilize market relations between key global partners.
During the final vote in the relevant committee, the initiative received strong and convincing support from the majority of European parliamentarians.
Thirty-one committee members voted in favor of the text, six voted against it, and three abstained.
European lawmakers set forth a series of strict and fundamental conditions prior to the final approval of this transatlantic agreement to maximize protection for domestic producers.
The committee chair emphasized that among the lawmakers’ key demands were a robust safeguard system with a provision limiting the agreement’s duration, a review clause, and safeguards against the imposition of new tariffs by the U.S.
This approach is intended to ensure the stability of the European market and prevent sudden changes in trade policy during the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Bernd Lange, head of the relevant committee, announced the decision on his page on the X platform.
