Ghana’s parliamentary committee to summon CID chief — MyJoyOnline
Ghana’s Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee plans to summon the Director-General of the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to obtain explanations regarding the handling of cases related to offensive content on social media. This was stated by committee member John Ntim Fordjour, MyJoyOnline reports.
Questions for the CID and minister
The Assin South MP said that the committee became interested in the CID chief’s recent press conference. According to him, the committee also plans to summon the minister responsible for the sector to discuss other incidents and investigations that were not addressed during the briefing.
Ntim Fordjour said that the committee wants to receive a broader explanation of how the police handle similar cases across the country. He claims that committee members have become aware of other cases, including videos, comments and security-related information that, in his view, require the attention of law enforcement agencies.

Discussion over online statements
According to the MP, some of these cases may have more serious security implications than those singled out by the CID chief at the press conference. The committee intends to establish what measures have been taken in such cases.
Ntim Fordjour’s statement came amid public discussions about the detention and criminal prosecution of social media commentator Salomey. Her case, according to the source, raised questions about the limits of police powers when responding to online statements.
