Chinese Communist Party to hold plenum in October — Channel NewsAsia

The fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China will be held in Beijing, China, on October 26–29, 2026. The dates of the meeting were set at a session of the 21-member Politburo chaired by Chinese President and party General Secretary Xi Jinping, Channel NewsAsia reports, citing the state news agency Xinhua.

Plenum agenda

The plenum will consider several important issues related to the continued advancement of comprehensive and strict party governance. In July, Xinhua, citing the Politburo, reported that this area faces new situations and challenges due to changes in the international and domestic environment, as well as within the party itself.

Plenary sessions of the Central Committee are held behind closed doors. This body includes approximately 200 members, and plenums are usually held about once a year to approve the party’s key political goals.

Fifth meeting of the term

The October meeting will be the fifth gathering of the Central Committee since the beginning of its current term following the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2022. The committee’s previous meeting, held in October 2025, was devoted to the economy and China’s 15th five-year development plan.

The next Congress of the Communist Party of China is scheduled for autumn 2027. Channel NewsAsia notes that Xi Jinping is expected to secure a fourth term as party leader there.
