Malaysia’s king allows Razak to serve sentence under house arrest — Anadolu Agency
Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim has granted former Prime Minister Najib Razak a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until August 2028.
Conditions of the pardon
The decision on the conditional pardon was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara. As Anadolu Agency reports, Razak must pay a fine of 50 million Malaysian ringgit, or about $12.3 million.
He must also comply with the conditions set by the decision. If they are violated, the pardon may be revoked.

Sentence in the SRC International case
Seventy-three-year-old Najib Razak has been held in Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022. At that time, Malaysia’s Federal Court upheld his conviction in a corruption case linked to SRC International, a former unit of the state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
In 2020, Razak was found guilty on seven charges, including abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering. The case concerned the transfer of 42 million ringgit, or about $10.3 million, from SRC International to his accounts. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison, but in 2024 the Pardons Board under the previous monarch halved the term, setting his release date as August 23, 2028.
