Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States. The talks may take place ahead of Trump’s planned summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States on Thursday.
Coordination on China
Japan and the United States are preparing for a meeting as Tokyo seeks to coordinate its position on China with Washington ahead of the US-China talks, Anadolu Agency reports, citing Kyodo News.
Japan seeks talks with Trump due to concerns about the further development of US-China relations, particularly regarding Taiwan and regional security.

Previous contacts between the leaders
The expected meeting will be at least the fourth in-person contact between Takaichi and Trump since she took office as prime minister in October 2025. Their first face-to-face summit took place in Tokyo on October 28, 2025, during Trump’s visit to Japan. The politicians later met at the White House on March 19 and briefly spoke on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France in June.
Since Takaichi took office, the leaders have also held at least four publicly announced telephone conversations — in October and November 2025, as well as in January and May this year. During the May call, Trump informed Takaichi about his talks with Xi Jinping after a visit to Beijing; the sides also discussed China, economic security and regional security.
