BRICS countries in New Delhi oppose the EU’s CBAM mechanism — The Hindu
BRICS countries at a meeting of environment ministers in New Delhi, India, spoke out against climate measures they described as “unilateral, punitive, discriminatory and protectionist.” Among such measures, participants named the European Union’s carbon border adjustment mechanisms — CBAM.
Joint ministerial statement
The position was set out in a joint statement adopted on August 18, 2026, at the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting, held under India’s chairmanship. As The Hindu International reports, the ministers said that carbon border measures such as CBAM could “undermine developing countries’ efforts to combat climate change and strengthen resilience.”

Climate finance
Participants in the meeting also called for a substantial increase in international financing to help developing countries adapt to climate change. The EU’s CBAM mechanisms require importers of carbon-intensive products to account for emissions associated with their production. Such products include iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity.
