Kremlin links AfD’s success to abandoning Russian gas — Daily Maverick
The Kremlin of the aggressor state, Russia, said that the first-place finish of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in state elections in northeastern Germany was largely linked to Berlin’s abandonment of cheap Russian gas. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also claimed that Germany buys more expensive gas from other countries, primarily the United States.
Peskov’s statement
As Daily Maverick reports, Peskov linked the declining competitiveness of the German economy to Germany’s decision to stop purchasing cheap Russian gas. According to him, the country sometimes paid several times more for gas on the spot market.
Peskov also said that some Germans are seeking an alternative to the current authorities in the hope of improving their situation.

Possible meeting with Dmitriev
According to two people familiar with the plans, Kirill Dmitriev, the chief economic envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and AfD leaders began preparing last week for a meeting next year. They may discuss resuming gas supplies to Germany, although AfD is not in power at the national level.
AfD and a representative of Dmitriev declined to comment on this information. The report also notes that Germany is trying to recover from the consequences of the shutdown of the Nord Stream undersea gas pipelines, which became unusable after explosions in September 2022.
