Cuba has denied the U.S. a request to import diesel fuel for its embassy amid an energy crisis

Cuban authorities have denied the U.S. Embassy in Havana permission to import diesel fuel for generators.

The Washington Post reported this, citing U.S. officials.

The refusal came as the U.S. State Department was considering a possible reduction in the diplomatic mission’s staff due to a fuel shortage. According to sources, if such a decision is made, Washington may demand a similar reduction in the staff of the Cuban Embassy in the U.S.

No immediate reduction is expected at this time, as diesel reserves are sufficient for about a month. At the same time, opportunities to obtain additional fuel in Cuba are limited, as all resources are controlled by the state.

Cuba is experiencing a severe energy crisis due to reduced oil supplies, particularly following the weakening of cooperation with Venezuela and increased sanctions pressure from the U.S. The government is attempting to offset the shortage through domestic production, natural gas, and renewable sources, but this is insufficient.

The country is experiencing widespread power outages, which are affecting the operation of hospitals, transportation, and educational institutions.

The situation is unfolding against a backdrop of growing tensions between Washington and Havana. The Donald Trump administration is demanding political and economic changes in Cuba, including the release of political prisoners, and does not rule out further pressure on the government of President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

As a reminder, Cuba has restored its power grid following a massive blackout.

Trump also confirmed the U.S. intention to intervene in Cuba.
