Rubio hinted at a possible deal with Iran amid falling oil prices
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a deal to end the war with Iran could be reached as early as “today.” His statement came amid growing optimism regarding negotiations between Washington and Tehran and sharp volatility in the oil markets.
This was reported by The Guardian.
According to Rubio, discussions between the parties are at an advanced stage, but he urged against jumping to conclusions.
“We thought that last night, or perhaps today, we might have some news—I wouldn’t read too much into it,” he said during a speech in New Delhi.
At the same time, he noted that there is a “fairly substantial proposal” on the negotiating table regarding the restoration of key transport routes and straits in the region.
According to media reports, potential progress in the negotiations has already impacted global markets: oil prices have fallen, while stock markets in Asia have risen amid expectations that the situation will stabilize.
Brent crude oil futures fell by about 4.5% to around $98 per barrel, the lowest level in the past two weeks.
Rubio also emphasized that Israel retains the right to self-defense.
“If Hezbollah fires rockets at them, Israel has every right to respond or prevent this,” the U.S. Secretary of State said.
He added that security mechanisms related to the situation in the region and shipping in strategically important straits are being discussed during the negotiations.
Against the backdrop of Rubio’s statements, U.S. President Donald Trump urged caution regarding the signing of the agreement, stressing that the negotiations must be thoroughly worked out.
According to media sources, a framework agreement between the parties may already be nearly finalized, but the final details are still being discussed.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington does not intend to rush into concluding an agreement with Iran, despite progress in the negotiations.
Iranian state media reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement regarding alleged agreements on opening the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “incomplete and untrue.”
The U.S. reacted strongly to Iran’s plans to introduce a toll system for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, stating that this is unacceptable and could derail any negotiations. Washington considers this strategic waterway critically important and will not allow Tehran to exert commercial or political control over it.
