Stubb could become Europe's chief negotiator with Russia

Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that he would not refuse to serve as Europe’s representative in potential negotiations with Russia. At the same time, he emphasized that talks about a peace process can only begin after Moscow agrees to a ceasefire.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb made a statement that immediately caught the attention of European diplomats. In an interview with the Finnish television channel Yle, he was asked if he was ready to serve as Europe’s representative in potential negotiations with Russia. Stubb replied briefly but quite eloquently: “It is probably impossible to answer this question in the negative.”

At the same time, the Finnish president immediately emphasized that it is too early to talk about real peace negotiations. According to him, the first step must be a ceasefire on Russia’s part. “Serious talks about peace can only begin after Russia agrees to a ceasefire,” Stubb stressed.

Following this statement, the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, citing sources in diplomatic circles, reported that Europe is indeed discussing the creation of a separate negotiation format for contacts with Moscow.

According to the publication, EU countries are looking for a politician who could represent the European side at a high level. And the President of Finland is currently being considered as one of the key candidates. Journalists note that Stubb has several advantages for such a role. He has long been active in European politics, served as Finland’s prime minister, headed the country’s Foreign Ministry, and is well-versed in the workings of the EU.

Furthermore, since joining NATO, Finland has become one of the most important countries on the Alliance’s northern flank. At the same time, Helsinki shares the longest land border with Russia among all EU member states.

Stubb himself has repeatedly stated in recent months that he supports a tough stance toward the Kremlin. He has also emphasized that Ukraine must receive strong security guarantees and that Europe must act more decisively.

So far, there has been no official decision regarding any EU negotiator. But the very fact that such discussions are taking place indicates that Europe is already considering a possible format for future dialogue with Russia—even as hostilities continue.

Against this backdrop, Stubb remains one of the most prominent European politicians who regularly comments on security issues, the war, and future relations with Moscow. And now his name is being mentioned more and more often not only in the context of Finland, but also throughout European diplomacy.

Stubb called on Europe to change its approach to supporting Ukraine.
