Latvia has dismissed as a Russian hoax the claim that Ukrainian drones were flown over its territory
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent an official note of protest to the Russian Embassy in Riga over the spread of disinformation regarding the alleged use of Latvian territory for attacks by Ukrainian UAVs on Russian ports.
According to the European Parliament, Riga has officially rejected these claims as baseless and demanded an immediate retraction of the false information. The ministry emphasized that such statements are part of a targeted disinformation campaign against the Baltic states.
The ministry’s statement underscores that Ukraine has a legitimate right to self-defense under the UN Charter, whereas Russia’s actions constitute a gross violation of international law. The Latvian side once again called on the aggressor to immediately cease hostilities and withdraw its troops from all internationally recognized territory of Ukraine.
The recent systematic strikes on Russia’s strategic oil ports in the Baltic Sea served as the pretext for Russian accusations. During these operations over the past week, there were instances of strike drones entering the airspace of the Baltic states and Finland, which Russia attempted to exploit for propaganda purposes.
Russian government spokesperson Dmitry Peskov issued explicit threats against European Union member states. Moscow claims it is prepared to take radical measures if information is confirmed that European airspace is being used to allow Ukrainian drones to fly over and attack targets on Russian territory.
As a reminder, Finland has supported Ukraine’s right to strike Russian oil refineries despite Ukrainian drones falling on its territory.
