Latvia to build drone production plant near Russian border together with Ukraine
Latvia, with support from Ukraine, plans to establish a drone manufacturing plant in the eastern part of the country near the border with Russia. Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs announced this during an extraordinary government meeting on the development of the Latgale region.
According to the prime minister, the region has some of the lowest wages in the country and faces serious employment challenges. Therefore, the authorities aim to attract new investments and create additional economic activity.
Kulbergs also said that Latvia plans to deploy an anti-drone defense system along its borders with Russia and Belarus by the end of summer. The system will use interceptor drones, allowing the country to respond to potential threats without involving aviation.
"If there is a threat from drones, we will not have to raise aircraft every time, which is a very effective solution, but not the best and most productive one", – the Latvian prime minister said.
In addition, the government plans to review the existing system for the construction and restoration of shelters in order to develop a unified approach to their implementation.

Latvia's Ministry of Defense will soon deploy additional air defense systems to strengthen the protection of the country's eastern border.
Latvia also plans to continue enhanced control measures along its eastern border.
