Latvian television is broadcasting the "Way of the Cross" live during the annual Roman Catholic pilgrimage to the basilica in Aglona. The basilica is Latvia’s main Roman Catholic shrine, according to LSM English.
Every year, pilgrims from Latvia and other countries gather in Aglona to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This holiday falls on August 15.

According to data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia for 2021, among the country’s 1.8 million residents, Roman Catholicism was the second-largest Christian denomination by number of adherents. The number of its adherents stood at 268,000.
Lutheranism was the largest Christian denomination in Latvia, with 287,000 adherents. The number of Orthodox Christians was 133,000. According to LSM English, Christianity was brought to Livonia by German crusaders in the 13th century, and in the following centuries, they forcibly converted local tribes.
