Ghana’s majority leader calls for stronger border protection over extremism threat
Ghana’s parliamentary majority leader, James Agalga, called on the country not to let its guard down over the threat of violent extremism and to strengthen border protection. Ghana’s relative stability in a region where violent extremism is growing must not create a false sense of security, MyJoyOnline reports.
Border incidents
According to Agalga, Ghana’s location and its proximity to countries suffering from violence by extremists expose the state to cross-border security threats. He said that enhanced vigilance, intelligence gathering and coordination among security agencies are needed to counter them.
Agalga said that the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies recorded 47 cross-border incursions in 2023–2025. According to his data, more than 300 people were also arrested along the country’s northern border in connection with suspected attempts to recruit for extremist groups.

Cybercrime and fraud
The chair of the parliamentary Defence and Interior Committee presented these figures at the ninth REPAM-CDS conference on security management. He stressed the need to strengthen security and governance systems to respond to emerging threats.
Separately, Agalga drew attention to the rise in cybercrime and fraud. According to 2024 crime statistics cited by him, the number of such cases increased by 12.3%. He noted that the threats are cross-border and asymmetric in nature and test state governance systems.
