The leader of the British right-wing populist party announced his resignation amid an investigation
Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing populist party Reform UK, has officially announced his resignation as a Member of Parliament for the Clacton-upon-Sea constituency. This move automatically triggers a by-election in the constituency in the near future, and Farage immediately confirmed his intention to run for the same seat again.
Farage explained his decision as a desire to give Clacton voters the opportunity to directly assess his performance. He described the upcoming campaign as a large-scale “battle of the people against the establishment.” The sudden announcement came amid the launch of a new high-profile investigation by the parliamentary committee on ethical standards.
British media reported that, one year before the 2024 general election, the politician received financial benefits from George Cotrell, who had been convicted of fraud, including undeclared assistance with security and social media management. Farage is also already the subject of another investigation into an undeclared gift of 5 million pounds from crypto investor Christopher Harborn.
The Reform UK leader himself categorically rejects any allegations of violating the law or misusing public funds. He called the scrutiny of his finances a “political tool of pressure” by his opponents. He cited the excessive media attention on his family as another factor in his decision to resign, noting that it had begun to threaten the safety of his loved ones.
Sky News reports this.
Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing populist party Reform UK, reacted to the announcement of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation by calling for a snap general election. The politician stated that British voters are no longer willing to tolerate politicians who, in his view, fail to fulfill their campaign promises after coming to power.
