Ghana’s minority leader calls cocaine hub remark a metaphor — MyJoyOnline

Ghana’s parliamentary minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, said that his remarks about the country potentially becoming a hub for cocaine-related activity were a metaphor, not a statement requiring evidence. He said this in an interview with Adom TV, MyJoyOnline reports.

Explanation of the statement

According to Afenyo-Markin, he was commenting on concerns about the possible movement of cocaine across Ghana’s borders. The politician noted that repeated cocaine-related arrests raise questions about the effectiveness of border controls.

He also referred to statements that, he said, had previously been made by Ghana’s interior minister: about the possible involvement of officials and foreign partners’ lack of trust in the country’s system. Afenyo-Markin cited these statements as grounds for his concern, rather than as established facts.

Potential transit point

The minority leader explained that he used the word “hub” to describe a risk: Ghana could become a transit point if cocaine were brought into the country and later transported to other destinations. In his view, uncontrolled use of transport routes could create conditions for such activity.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that minority representatives had merely reiterated concerns that, according to him, had already been voiced by Ghana’s interior minister.
