EU leaders failed to persuade Orbán to release €90 billion for Ukraine — Politico

During the summit, EU leaders were unable to reach an agreement with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on unblocking financial aid to Ukraine.

This was reported by Politico.

According to the publication’s sources, discussions on the issue lasted about an hour and a half, but no clear decision was reached.

Sources note that the talks were fruitless, and Hungary’s position remained unchanged.

One of the diplomats also reported that European Council President António Costa sharply criticized Orbán’s actions, calling the situation unacceptable.

According to him, the Hungarian prime minister’s behavior contradicts the basic principles of cooperation within the EU and effectively crosses a “red line” that no EU leader had previously crossed.

Ukraine has sufficient budgetary resources to continue financing government spending and defense at least until early May. Meanwhile, the European Union has additional time to resolve the issue of Hungary’s veto on the allocation of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine.

As a reminder, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Europe can use the €90 billion in financial aid for Ukraine without additional approval from Hungary, since this decision has already been supported by all countries, including Budapest.
