The leadership of the European Parliament has expressed solidarity with the Baltic states following baseless accusations by Russia that they are allegedly preparing hostile actions against Russia.
This is stated in a declaration by the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament.
The statement emphasizes that the accusations against Latvia, as well as Estonia and Lithuania, regarding the alleged permission to use their territory, airspace, or military facilities for attacks on Russia are dangerous provocations and disinformation.
The European Parliament emphasized that such actions are part of a broader campaign of intimidation and destabilization directed against EU member states, particularly in light of repeated incidents involving unidentified drones in the region.
“No EU member state can be threatened, intimidated, or pressured by Russia. The security of the Baltic states is the security of the entire European Union,” the authors of the statement noted.
European Parliament leaders called on the European Commission, the Council of the EU, and European diplomatic services, in coordination with NATO, to strengthen the defense of the eastern flank, particularly airspace surveillance, counter-drone capabilities, and countering disinformation.
Earlier, the parties “Latvia First,” “National Alliance,” and “United List” called on Andris Spruds to step down following yet another drone incident in the country.
As a reminder, on May 7, Latvia detected new unidentified drones in its airspace that had flown in from Russian territory; one of them struck an oil depot in Rēzekne. It has not yet been confirmed whether these were Ukrainian or Russian drones.
The Latvian Prime Minister criticized the warning system following the crash of a drone from Russia.
