Lithuania is building a new military camp near Belarus

UA.NEWS 20 August 2026 20:20
Lithuania is building a new military camp near Belarus

Lithuania will begin construction of a new military camp at the Rudninkai training ground, approximately 16 km from the border with Belarus. The facility is designed to accommodate more than 1,000 military personnel and will become part of the infrastructure for German troops and other NATO units. Construction is expected to cost approximately €40 million, with work scheduled for completion in the first half of 2028.

The new facility will be located at the Rudninkai training ground in Lithuania. It is approximately 16 kilometers from the Belarusian border, making the construction site crucial for the defense of NATO’s eastern flank. A plot of land covering about seven hectares has already been designated for the new camp. The plan is to build a full-fledged military infrastructure on this site, rather than just a temporary accommodation facility for troops.

Barracks and other living quarters, support buildings, technical facilities, and transportation infrastructure are to be built there. This will allow military personnel not only to stay at the training ground temporarily but also to be properly accommodated there during training exercises and missions. According to plans by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, the camp will be able to accommodate more than 1,000 military personnel at any given time. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2028.

The camp is intended for German military personnel

The new facility is primarily linked to the presence of German military personnel in Lithuania. Germany is deploying its 45th Armored Brigade to the country, which is set to become one of NATO’s key units on the Alliance’s eastern flank. The Rudninkai training ground is set to become the main base for this brigade. Therefore, Lithuania is gradually creating the necessary conditions to allow German military personnel to be stationed permanently on its territory.

The total strength of the German brigade is expected to be approximately 4,800 service members and 200 civilian employees. According to plans, the unit is expected to reach full combat readiness as early as next year. Currently, there are already approximately 2,000 German service members in Lithuania. Their numbers will gradually increase as the brigade is formed and deployed. The new camp is intended to accommodate part of this contingent and provide the military with the necessary infrastructure.

Why Lithuania Is Strengthening Its Defense

The decision to build a new military facility comes amid growing concern for the security of the Baltic states. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia share a border with either Russia or Belarus, so they are paying particularly close attention to military activity by Moscow and Minsk. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the Baltic states have significantly strengthened their own defenses. At the same time, they actively support an increased presence of NATO allies on their territory.

For Lithuania, the issue of securing its border with Belarus is particularly important. Minsk is a military ally of Moscow, and Russian troops used Belarusian territory during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Therefore, the deployment of additional NATO forces near the Belarusian border is not only of practical but also of strategic importance. The allies want to have trained units and infrastructure that can be rapidly deployed in the event of a threat.

Rudninkai is becoming an important military site

The Rudninkai training ground was not chosen by chance as the location for the German brigade. It is located in southeastern Lithuania, near the border with Belarus. After Russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine, the area was officially designated as a Lithuanian military training ground. The country passed a special law to this effect.

Now, modern infrastructure for Lithuanian and allied forces is gradually being built here. New barracks and support facilities are intended to make the training ground suitable for the long-term deployment of a large number of military personnel. In the future, Rudninkai is expected to play an important role in the operations of the German brigade. Military personnel will be able to conduct exercises here, train with equipment, and prepare for joint operations with forces from other NATO countries.

The German brigade will become a permanent Bundeswehr presence

The deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania has another important aspect. This is the Bundeswehr’s first permanent overseas mission since World War II. Germany has previously participated in international military missions, but the permanent deployment of a large combat brigade outside the country is a significant step for the German military. This is not about short-term exercises or the rotation of a small group of troops. The German brigade is to remain in Lithuania on a permanent basis and be part of NATO’s defense system.

Its creation also demonstrates how much the military situation in Europe has changed since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. For Lithuania, the permanent presence of a large unit from an allied nation provides an additional security guarantee. For Germany, it is an opportunity to directly strengthen the defense of NATO’s eastern flank.

How Much Will Construction Cost?

Lithuania plans to spend approximately €40 million on the new military camp. These funds will go toward the construction of housing and support facilities, technical infrastructure, and transportation facilities.

In fact, Lithuania is investing not only in the buildings themselves but also in creating the conditions for the permanent stationing of a large military unit. Construction is scheduled to continue through the first half of 2028. Until then, Germany will continue to build up its brigade in Lithuania. As a result, Rudninkai is set to become one of the key locations for the deployment of German troops in the country.

What This Means for NATO

The new camp is part of a broader effort to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. The Alliance is increasing its military presence in countries that directly border Russia or Belarus. This is particularly important for Lithuania due to its geographic location. The country lies between Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast, so the ability to rapidly deploy and station allied troops is of great importance.

Having ready-made military infrastructure means no time is wasted building a base in the event of a sudden escalation. Troops can immediately use the prepared barracks, roads, technical facilities, and other structures. Therefore, the construction of a camp 16 km from the Belarusian border is not just another construction project. Lithuania is creating additional opportunities for a permanent NATO presence directly near one of the most sensitive sectors of the Alliance’s eastern flank.

As a result, Lithuania is set to gain a modern military facility capable of accommodating more than a thousand troops at a time, which will become part of the infrastructure for a German armored brigade. This was reported by DPA.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys called on allies to support Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union by 2030 following yet another Russian attack.
