Lithuania has no evidence of a deliberate attack by Russia on its embassy in Kyiv

Lithuania has no evidence that Russia deliberately targeted its embassy in Kyiv during last week’s missile strikes, which caused damage to the diplomatic mission’s premises. According to available information, the missiles struck very close to the diplomatic mission, but the building itself was not their target. 

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys noted that there were no visible military or other strategic facilities near the embassy, except for a thermal power plant located one and a half kilometers away.

 The Lithuanian official emphasized that Russia remains responsible for the security of diplomatic missions under international law, and that the explosions damaged the roof and shattered windows in the building. Budris asserted that the destruction of civilian infrastructure constitutes a crime, and therefore Lithuania will demand compensation from Russia for the damages caused.

Earlier, Kęstutis Budrys stated that he does not rule out the possibility that Russia—the aggressor state—deliberately targeted diplomatic missions in Kyiv. He made this statement after the Lithuanian embassy building was damaged by two missiles during a Russian attack on the capital on the night of August 1.

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to express its protest over Russia’s large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s civilian population and infrastructure.
