Lithuania has temporarily reduced the excise tax on diesel to curb rising prices
On Tuesday, April 14, the Lithuanian Parliament approved a temporary reduction in the excise tax on diesel fuel. The decision was made to curb rising fuel prices caused by tensions in the Middle East.
This was reported by LRT.
This move is expected to reduce the cost of diesel by approximately 6 cents per liter. The reduction will remain in effect for two months—until June 15.
The measure applies to both regular diesel fuel and diesel used in agriculture.
Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekūnas stated that the decision was made due to a sharp rise in fuel prices on global markets.
“The government initiated this reduction because diesel fuel prices have been hit hardest by tensions in global oil and fuel markets,” he noted.
Under the approved changes, excise tax rates are being reduced to 503.6 euros per 1,000 liters for standard diesel and to 35 euros per 1,000 liters for agricultural diesel fuel.
According to the Lithuanian Energy Agency, since early March, gasoline prices in the country have risen by 30 cents per liter, and diesel prices by 55 cents.
As of April 14, 2026, leading gas station chains in Ukraine have updated their price tags, reflecting yet another increase in diesel fuel prices.
