Lebanon says Israel carried out explosion in Mansouri — Channel NewsAsia

A powerful explosion occurred on September 28 in the Lebanese village of Mansouri in the Tyre district, which Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency attributed to Israeli forces. As Channel NewsAsia reports, the blast was heard in the city of Tyre and several neighboring localities.

Statements by the parties

AFP correspondents reported that large clouds of smoke rose above the largely destroyed village after the explosion. The Israeli army said it had completed an operation in Mansouri, during which, according to its information, it dismantled more than 600 sites described by the military as terrorist infrastructure, as well as eight underground routes.

Lebanese authorities accuse Israel of systematically destroying villages in the country’s south, including residential buildings, schools, religious sites, water and electricity infrastructure.

Situation in the Tyre area

Mansouri is located about nine kilometers south of Tyre and 10 kilometers from Israel. In recent weeks, the village and nearby areas have been subjected to Israeli strikes and artillery shelling despite a ceasefire that came into force in June.

During the ceasefire, the Mansouri municipality informed residents that they could return home, but advised them to avoid areas included in the security zone declared by Israel. Last month, the Israeli military ordered residents to evacuate ahead of the complete occupation of the village. Since then, according to correspondents, demolitions and explosions have regularly taken place in Mansouri.

After hostilities began in March, Israel carried out massive airstrikes and launched a ground invasion. Lebanon says that more than 4,300 people have been killed as a result. Despite a decline in violence following the June ceasefire, Israel continues its attacks and keeps troops in its declared security zone extending about 10 kilometers into southern Lebanon.
