Lula has officially announced his candidacy for a fourth presidential term in Brazil
Brazil’s ruling Workers’ Party has officially endorsed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s candidacy for the election scheduled for October. For the 80-year-old politician, this will be his seventh campaign for the country’s highest office and likely his last attempt at re-election. Lula is running for a fourth presidential term, according to France 24.
During the party convention, Lula stated that he is in good physical shape, exercises regularly, and walks for an hour every day. He said he feels much better than when he first became president in 2002.
The president also expressed his intention to develop Brazil’s defense industry and protect its rare mineral resources. He said that representatives from China, the U.S., or France would not have access to these resources without respecting Brazil’s sovereignty. Lula added that bolder action is needed to bring about change in the country.

Lula’s opponent in the election is Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. He has received open support from representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, Argentine President Javier Milei, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recorded a video message in support of the incumbent president’s opponent.
Representatives of the Workers’ Party have expressed concern about possible foreign interference in the election. In particular, they cited the risks of coordinated bot campaigns and manipulation on social media, which could influence voters and undermine confidence in the electronic voting system. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who will run again alongside Lula, stated that this system is very reliable.
Lula’s campaign is focusing on changes to the income tax system that reduce the tax burden on low-income earners, as well as on a debt relief program. According to France 24, Lula has managed to win over centrist parties, and his popularity in the polls is now higher than it was six months ago.
