Madyar held talks with Fico and set a condition for Slovakia

Péter Magyar, the future head of the Hungarian government and leader of the Tisza Party, held a telephone conversation with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

During the conversation, the Hungarian politician clearly outlined the red lines, without which further intergovernmental dialogue and the strengthening of relations would be impossible.

Mátyás’s main demand was the protection of the rights of ethnic Hungarians living in Slovakia (the so-called Upper Hungary).

The politician insists on the immediate repeal of legislative provisions that impose criminal liability on members of the Hungarian minority.

“I made it clear to him that we can discuss any political issue only on the condition that Slovakia repeals the law that threatens Hungarians in the Upper Lands with imprisonment,” Mádor stated in his official address.

A separate point of discussion was the painful historical issue—the Beneš Decrees and the principle of collective guilt.

Péter Magyar demands official guarantees that the lands of Hungarian compatriots in Slovakia will not be confiscated on the basis of these acts.

He emphasized that Hungarians’ property rights must be protected from any encroachments based on the discriminatory norms of the past.

Despite his firm stance, the leader of the Tisa Party expressed a willingness to engage in constructive work in the future.

He stressed that his government would seek to strengthen Hungarian-Slovak ties and fully restore Visegrad cooperation.

However, Magyar noted that “all of this must be preceded by the clarification and resolution of the aforementioned issues,” as the protection of the rights of Hungarians abroad is his absolute priority.

Robert Fico and Péter Magyar agreed not to limit themselves to a phone call and to continue discussing the issues in person.

The next meeting between the leaders is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the European Council summit, which will soon be held in Brussels. It is expected that the parties will attempt to find a compromise regarding legislative changes in Slovakia there.

Von der Leyen and Magyar discussed the release of EU funds for Hungary

Mátyás spoke out against Ukraine’s rapid accession to the EU.

Péter Magyar is the first cousin of the former president of Hungary and the grandson of a judge.

Mágyar called on Orbán’s puppets to resign.
