Hungary's future prime minister has declined security protection

The winner of Hungary’s parliamentary elections and likely future prime minister, Péter Magyar, has declined an offer to provide him with round-the-clock police protection. The politician thanked the head of the National Police for the initiative but stated his intention to continue working without involving law enforcement for his own safety.

He wrote about this on social media platform X, emphasizing that he has never had any reason to fear for his safety and plans to work in a way that ensures this remains the case.

Mátyás emphasized that he strives to build a country where no one who lives and works honestly will have to fear for their life. The politician also expressed his gratitude to Hungarian police officers for their daily service. The decision to decline security protection was announced on Thursday, April 16, amid the formation of a new political landscape in Hungary following the 2026 elections.

Péter Magyar is the first cousin of the former president of Hungary and the grandson of a judge.
