Hungary's incoming prime minister has stated that Netanyahu could be arrested under an ICC warrant
Hungary’s incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the country’s existing international obligations to the International Criminal Court may require the detention of individuals subject to arrest warrants if they are present on Hungarian territory.
This was reported by Al Jazeera.
He made these remarks while speaking with journalists in Budapest, commenting on a question regarding a possible visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to Magyar, Hungary will remain a member of the International Criminal Court, despite the Viktor Orbán government’s previous intentions to withdraw from the institution.
“If someone is wanted by the International Criminal Court and that person enters our country, they must be detained,” he stated.
He also clarified that the new government will have until June 2 to finalize its position on Hungary’s participation in the ICC.
Thus, under existing international obligations, the potential arrival of individuals subject to an International Criminal Court warrant could create legal grounds for their detention within the country.
