Mahama announces new tasks for Ghana’s military — MyJoyOnline
Ghanaian President John Mahama said that the country’s armed forces will be involved in new emergency operations and national development projects. In particular, the 48th Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces is providing operational and engineering support during the removal of accumulated waste from Agbogbloshie to the engineered Adepa landfill, MyJoyOnline reports.
Waste removal
Mahama made the statement on September 18 before the official announcement of the start of garbage removal. According to him, the operation demonstrates the ability to coordinate the resources of state institutions to address national problems.
The work is funded by the Ministry of Finance, with additional support from the District Assemblies Common Fund. The operation is led by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Role of the 48th Engineer Regiment
The president noted that the 48th Engineer Regiment was recently recognized for participating in the clearing of the Accra–Kumasi highway. After the work in Agbogbloshie, the unit will be assigned other national tasks, Mahama said.
Mahama stressed that military personnel will be involved not only in combat operations but also in emergency operations. He also noted the importance of the armed forces’ engineering expertise, logistical capabilities and discipline for the safe and effective completion of the work.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has engaged private road contractors, some of whom promised to provide dump trucks and other equipment. It will supplement the machinery of the District Roads Improvement Programme involved in waste removal. The operation is part of a plan to clean up Agbogbloshie and subsequently restore the area within the proposed Agbogbloshie Urban Land Renewal Project.
