Marsia Langton said she felt offended by the support shown for Jewish Australians

Australian scholar and indigenous rights advocate Marcia Langton stated during hearings of the Royal Commission on Anti-Semitism and Social Cohesion that she had been subjected to racist insults and attacks because of her support for Jewish Australians. This was reported by ABC News Australia.

According to Langton, members of the pro-Palestinian movement in Melbourne called her the derogatory label “zio.” She also said that some people refused to participate in panel discussions where she was scheduled to speak, and that the windows of her car were smashed.

The scholar emphasized that such a label effectively silences her in public discourse. Langton stated that she opposes what is happening in Gaza; however, in her view, this cannot justify mistreating Jewish Australians.

The commission also heard testimony from a Jewish Australian woman who works at a childcare center. About 70% of the families registered at this facility are not Jewish. The woman, identified in the article by the initials AEA, explained that children are introduced to Jewish culture through sensory activities based on Jewish traditions.

In particular, every Friday the children bake challah and take the bread home to share with their families. According to AEA, the goal of these activities is not for non-Jewish children to adopt religious practices, but to highlight values shared across different cultures, particularly the tradition of eating together as a family. A pilot program is being developed based on this center’s model.
