A massive wildfire near Barcelona has destroyed more than 2,000 hectares
Near Barcelona, firefighters continue to battle a massive wildfire that has engulfed an area of a nature park. According to preliminary data, the fire has already destroyed about 2,300 hectares, most of which are forested areas.
The fire broke out on Friday in the municipality of La Bisbal d’Empordà, north of Barcelona, and spread to the adjacent national park. About 500 firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze overnight, which helped “stabilize” the fire’s right flank.
The fire destroyed 2,300 hectares, mostly forest. One house and a farm building were also burned down, but there were no casualties.
Due to the fire, residents of seven nearby municipalities—about 12,000 people—were advised to stay indoors with their windows closed and not to attempt to leave the fire zone until directly instructed to do so.
The fire and rescue service emphasized that attempting to evacuate on one’s own is risky, as people could become trapped by the fire on the road—as happened several years ago in Portugal.
