Meloni continues to support Trump despite the controversy
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that she does not regret the efforts she made to build a relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump. According to her, she did so out of a belief in Western unity, even despite public disagreements between them.
The Italian prime minister was previously considered one of Trump’s closest European partners. However, in recent months, differences have arisen between the two politicians, and the U.S. leader himself has repeatedly criticized her in interviews and social media posts.
During a conversation with journalists, Meloni was asked if she regretted the “political capital” she had invested in her relationship with Trump. “No, I have absolutely no regrets,” she replied.
According to Meloni, she sought closer ties with the U.S. not because of personal sympathies toward a specific politician, but because of her own vision of international politics. “I made this political investment because I believe in the unity of the West,” said the Italian prime minister.
She also emphasized that this position is not new to her and is not solely linked to Trump’s rise to power. “This is not a strategy I adopted with Trump’s arrival, but one I have consistently followed in my relations with all my counterparts,” Meloni added.
Despite differing views on specific issues, Italy continues to maintain close dialogue with the U.S. Meloni states that cooperation between the countries remains vital for preserving the unity of Western allies. Meloni made these remarks on July 8 during the NATO summit in Ankara.
