Karachi mayor inaugurates Rs360 million Jahangir Road reconstruction project
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on September 2 inaugurated the reconstruction and modernization project for Jahangir Road on the section between Gurumandir and Teen Hatti. The work cost Rs360 million, Dawn reports.
The work covered 1.4 km of one of the city’s main thoroughfares. As part of the project, the road was widened, drainage and sidewalks were installed, road markings were applied, and street lighting was installed.
Road widening and drainage
According to Wahab, the road’s width was increased from 26 to 32 feet to improve traffic flow and make the route more convenient for users. A total of 252,000 square feet of 80-mm-thick paving blocks and 70,000 square feet of 60-mm-thick paving blocks were installed on the section.
The project also included 50,000 square feet each of asphalt base course and asphalt concrete surfacing. Damaged sewer lines along the road were restored.

Trenches with a total length of more than 11,800 linear feet were laid for a 36-inch rainwater drainage line. Forty-five manholes were also built, and sewer networks were connected to the Lyari River to improve drainage.
Lighting and upcoming projects
Sidewalks were built on Jahangir Road, 80 new solar-powered streetlights were installed, and six damaged lighting poles were replaced. Wahab said the reconstruction should make travel easier for millions of people who use this route.
The mayor also announced the start of work on SM Taufiq Road and the route connecting Gurumandir with Patel Para. Construction of a flyover on Nishtar Road is ongoing, he said. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation plans to create 70 new parks in the city during the current year.
