New York Mayor Mamdani congratulates Jewish community on Rosh Hashanah
In New York, United States, Mayor Zohran Mamdani congratulated the city’s Jewish residents on Rosh Hashanah, which marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year. In a post on X, he wished those celebrating a sweet, joyful and meaningful Rosh Hashanah.
Mamdani also expressed the hope that the new year would be filled with health, happiness and blessings. He separately mentioned the New York Knicks basketball club and wished it another championship.

As The Jerusalem Post reports, the mayor attached a one-minute-and-40-second video filmed at City Hall ahead of the holiday to the post. In the recording, Mamdani hosts 10 young Jewish children — five boys and five girls — who, according to the publication’s estimate, are about five or six years old.

The children sat at a table with a plate of apples and honey. In the video, they told the mayor about the tradition of dipping apples in honey, which symbolizes the wish for a sweet new year, as well as the greeting “Shanah Tovah.” Later, Mamdani cut apples for them.
Wishes for the New Year
The mayor asked what could make the coming year sweet for the children. Among the answers were a jetpack, the Messiah and family. Mamdani said that for him, such events would be a second consecutive New York Knicks championship and for every city resident to love living in the city. He also added that he would like Arsenal Football Club to win the Champions League.
At the end of the video, Mamdani and the children said “Shanah Tovah” together. Rosh Hashanah opens the period of the High Holidays in Jewish tradition, which precedes Yom Kippur and is associated with prayers, repentance and hope for a sweet new year.
