The mayor of Krakow was forced to resign following a vote
A referendum was held in Kraków, in which residents voted to recall Mayor Aleksander Michalski, a representative of Donald Tusk’s party. Despite low voter turnout, the result was sufficient to trigger his resignation, and the city is preparing for new elections, according to Onet.
A referendum has concluded in Krakow, effectively bringing an end to the tenure of incumbent Mayor Aleksander Michalski. The majority of those who voted supported his recall, and this was enough for the procedure to be deemed valid.
According to official data, over 171,000 people supported the mayor’s removal, while only a few thousand opposed it. Voter turnout was nearly 30%, but this did not prevent the result from taking effect, as the participation threshold was lower than the actual turnout.
Now the city must announce new mayoral elections, which must take place within 90 days. Until then, Kraków will be led by an interim administrator appointed by the prime minister. Miszalski himself acknowledged the result and called the past few months an important political experience, emphasizing that serving as mayor was an honor for him, although not all decisions were implemented as he had planned.
The referendum was initiated by a group of local activists, who were joined by the mayor’s political opponents and representatives of right-wing forces. They accused the city government of financial mismanagement, poor transportation decisions, and flawed personnel policies.
The result of the vote is already being called a political victory for the opposition, which claims that this could mark the beginning of broader changes in local politics in Poland.
